The history of Ormonde Fields, dates back to 1925, when it was originally opened as a 9 hole course for the benefit of the local businessmen, it was later extended to a full 18 holes. To celebrate its reopening, the club invited the Second World War fighter pilot, Sir Douglas Bader to do the honours.
The stately Clubhouse, situated in the middle of the golf course, replaces the original wooden building, located by the side of the A610. In 1996 the course was extensively redesigned to improve the layout and add more challenging holes. To keep the historic connection, Lady Bader was invited to the official opening on June 20th of that year. The day’s celebrations included an impressive flying display by a Super Marine Spitfire.
The course now measures 6,520 yards, with both the par and standard scratch at 72. The gently rolling fairways are all tree lined, and with its many ponds a wayward strike of the ball may be penalised, but a good shot generously rewarded. A round of golf on the course offers many spectacular views, including the 11th Century Codnor Castle, recently featured on TVs Time Team programme.
With an abundance of both animal & bird life, Ormonde Fields Golf Club rewards the golfer with a unique and enjoyable experience. |
